Dental & Vision Plans Under the Age of 65

Why Dental & Vision Insurance Matters

Routine dental and eye care play a big role in long-term health — and most major medical plans don’t include them.

Dental and vision insurance can reduce your out-of-pocket costs for preventive services and give you peace of mind if you need more serious treatment down the road. These plans are especially helpful for people who don’t have coverage for preventive services like dental cleanings and eye exams, and want to avoid expenses for more extensive treatments.

Note: ACA Marketplace plans provide basic dental and vision coverage for children.

What Do Dental Plans Cover?

Dental plans typically include three tiers of coverage:

  • Preventive care: Exams, cleanings, and x-rays (often 100% covered)
  • Basic care: Fillings, extractions, and simple procedures
  • Major care: Crowns, root canals, dentures, or oral surgery

Many plans include waiting periods for basic and major services. Some also offer orthodontic benefits, especially for children.

What Do Vision Plans Cover?

Vision insurance is often very affordable and covers:

  • Regular vision checks: Routine eye exams
  • Vision correction: Prescription glasses or contact lenses
  • Special services: Discounts on LASIK or specialty lenses
  • Access to retail or provider networks

Some plans include coverage for medical eye care, though more advanced treatments may fall under your medical insurance.

How to Choose a Plan

When comparing plans, consider:

  • Provider network: Are your dentist or eye doctor in-network?
  • Coverage levels: Look at annual limits, copays, and coinsurance for basic and major services.
  • Waiting periods: Some plans don’t cover major services right away.
  • Bundled options: Some insurers offer dental + vision plans together for convenience.

Dental, Vision & Hearing Plans for Age 65 and Up

Why Medicare Beneficiaries Need Dental, Vision, and Hearing (DVH) Coverage

Original Medicare offers excellent hospital and medical coverage — but routine dental, vision, and hearing care are not included.

Here’s what’s
not covered by Original Medicare:

  • Dental cleanings, exams, fillings, dentures
  • Vision exams, glasses, contact lenses
  • Hearing exams or hearing aids

Medicare Part A may cover dental work, but only when it’s linked to a covered inpatient procedure. Medicare Part B covers limited vision services related to medical conditions (e.g., cataract surgery), but not routine care.

Options for Dental, Vision & Hearing Coverage

There are three common ways to get DVH benefits when you’re on Medicare:

  • Bundled Health Insurance Plans: Some plans include DVH benefits like routine cleanings, eye exams, glasses, or even hearing aids. Talk to us about details and options.

  • Standalone DVH Plans: Separate insurance can be purchased for dental, vision, and hearing. These plans are flexible and available for enrollment year-round.

  • Discount Plans (Non-Insurance): Discount networks offer reduced rates for services, but don’t provide coverage or financial protection. You pay the provider directly at a discounted rate.

Choosing a Dental, Vision & Hearing Plan

Here are some things to consider when comparing DVH plans:

  • Your Health Needs: Consider any known or likely care needs (e.g., dentures or implants, hearing aids, cataract care), as well as routine services.

  • Benefits & Services: Check for preferred providers, frequency limits, and maximum benefits.

  • Costs & Budget: Compare premiums, copays, and annual benefit maximums. Some standalone DVH plans have generous coverage but higher premiums, while others trade off coverage for lower monthly costs.

Enrolling in DVH Plans

Standalone DVH plans are often open to enrollment year-round, with no need to wait for a specific enrollment period. Confirm availability windows with specific carriers in your region.
